Are you looking at your bathroom and are wondering what you can do to change things up a bit? Have you been watching DIY videos and are inspired to tackle your bathroom remodeling project on your own? Have you decided on replacing your bathtub with a walk-in shower but do not know how or where to start? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then here are 5 DIY steps to help you remodel your bathroom when replacing your bathtub with a walk-in shower.
1. Gather Tools and Supplies
Screwdriver, wrench, putty knife, utility knife, drywall saw, and a pry bar are some of the basic tools you will need to get started. You may also need a tub drain extractor tool for drains that do not have crossbars. Depending on the type of walk-in shower design you have selected, you may need to supplement your supplies list in addition to acquiring plywood and/or a tarp for floor protection. You may also need additional plumbing supplies to replace any outdated pipes.
2. Shut Off The Water Supply
Before beginning your project, you should shut off your home’s water supply. To do this, you will need to find the main water shut off valve. There are two possible places where the shut valve may be located, outside near the curb or in the utility area of your home. Once you have found the shutoff valve, turn off the water supply by setting the valve in a perpendicular position.
3. Prep The Space
Now that you have gathered all your tools and supplies and have shut off the water supply, you are now ready to begin. The next step involves carefully removing the tub, the drain, and plumbing fixtures using your tools. When removing the tub, use plywood as a skid to help you easily slide the tub away from the alcove.
4. Walls and Floors
Depending on the type of walk-in shower design you have chosen, you may need to continue preparing the alcove before installation. This means prepping the walls and flooring for your chosen material, such as in the case of replacing the tiles on the wall.
5. Installation
Now that you have completed the above steps, you are now ready to install your new walk-in shower. See, it wasn’t all that difficult, was it?
