Wondering about the impact the kitchen remodeling process will have on your lifestyle? VL Builders has you covered. Once you’ve found the best contractor for your needs, planned and scheduled the remodel, it’s time to prepare your home for the process.
Here are some tips on how to pack your kitchen up and prepare for your upcoming remodel.
Ready, Set, Go! How to Get Ready for Your Remodel
1. Set aside the items you will need during the remodel.
You will need access to some kitchen basics while your home is being remodeled. Use some clear storage containers and fill them with necessities like:
- Cleaning supplies
- Utensils
- Cups, plates, and bowls
- Paper plates
- Frequently used pots and pans
- Serving spoons
- Small appliances you use regularly
2. Gather proper packing supplies.
Boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, a good sharpie marker, and newspaper are all important to have on hand. You’ll want to ensure you can take good care of your heirlooms, and any fine china you need to pack up before the remodel.
3. Remove everything from your kitchen cabinets and drawers.
You’ll be surprised at how much can be stored away in your kitchen cabinets, drawers, and pantry! Set aside ample time to take everything out of them, and even more time to decide each item’s destiny:
- Keep it—Keep the items you love and need that will complement your kitchen upgrade. Place these things in a box. Label it, seal it, and store it in your attic.
- Pitch it—It’s time to part with those things you’ve been stashing in your cabinets. Throw away all the things that are worn out, broken, and unfixable.
- Give it—Do you have more than you really need? Create a box of donatable items that you may have duplicates of or that you simply don’t need anymore. Drop these at a local charity.
4. Categorize boxes.
As you pack everything away you want to keep, categorize items in boxes with similar things. This will make it easy for you to unpack and reorganize once your kitchen remodel is complete. You may want to number boxes and title them. Next, create a master list on your phone or computer with the numbers on it and the title of each box so you know where to locate something if you need it before the remodel is complete.
5. Set up a temporary designated “kitchen.”
Use your kitchen table or a card table in an area that is out of the way of the remodeling crew. Make sure it’s within reach of an outlet in case you need to use something like a portable electric burner, a crock pot, or a blender. Organize your needed supplies so you can easily use your temporary kitchen while your remodel takes place.
6. Prepare some meals ahead of time.
Before your remodeling project begins, if you take a day to make some one-pot meals and freeze them, it will save you time, money, and hassle during your kitchen renovation process. Planning ahead for your meals is a great way to avoid eating out all the time, and keeps the stress at bay while your home is being upgraded.
7. Store all packed items out of the way.
What you don’t need is to create disorder in another area of your home just because your kitchen is being renovated. Find a place to safely store all your boxes while your home is temporarily being updated. Your attic, bonus room, and even a walk-in closet are all fair game when it comes to safely stowing your boxed-up kitchen items away for a period of time. You’ll appreciate all the order you keep throughout your home during this process, so it’s worth the effort to tuck them away.
8. Make arrangements for your pets.
When your kitchen is being transformed, there will be some noise in the home and a team of professionals inside throughout the process. If you have a pet who may be frightened by the noise or who could want to make friends with the pro team, it may be best to find a temporary place for your pet to be cared for.
9. Plan ahead for your children and family members.
Ensure any small children or seniors will be in safe locations during your remodel.
10. Cover your electronics.
Renovations can create a lot of dust, so cover your electronics in your kitchen and nearby rooms. Additionally, your heating and air conditioning unit may capture dust throughout the remodeling process, so check your filters before and after your kitchen transformation. Replace them if necessary.
